The Kaduna State Government has suspended activities planned to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary in the state.
The celebration, which was scheduled to take place on Thursday, October 1, 2026, was suspended with immediate effect from Monday, September 28.
The decision was announced by the Kaduna State Commissioner for Information and Culture, Ahmed Maiyaki, in a statement issued on behalf of the state government.
According to the statement, the government informed residents and other stakeholders of the suspension and expressed regret for any inconvenience the decision may cause.
The government also appreciated residents and stakeholders for their cooperation, understanding and support following the decision.
The state did not provide a specific reason for suspending the planned celebration in the announcement. The development comes after the Federal Government announced that the 66th Independence Anniversary would be observed with low-key activities, including a public lecture and the President’s nationwide broadcast on October 1.
Kaduna’s decision means the state will not hold the public celebration earlier planned to mark the anniversary, while Nigerians across the country continue to commemorate the nation’s independence from British colonial rule in 1960.
