Kayode Marks Dream Italy Debut With Goal and Assist Against Turkey

Brentford defender Michael Kayode described his senior Italy debut as a dream after producing a goal and an assist in the Azzurri’s 4-1 Nations League victory over Turkey in Bursa.

The 22-year-old right-back was handed his first senior international cap and made an immediate impression as Italy responded strongly to their previous defeat.

Kayode initially saw his effort saved, but Davide Frattesi reacted quickly to the rebound and fired Italy into the lead.

The Brentford defender then got his name on the scoresheet, scoring his first international goal to double Italy’s advantage and cap a memorable debut.

“I didn’t expect my debut to go like this, so I am really happy,” Kayode said after the match.

He praised Italy’s performance, particularly their determination to respond in a challenging atmosphere.

“We played in the first half with a fantastic simplicity and determination. We wanted to really prove ourselves in a difficult match in an incredible stadium atmosphere, so winning here was fantastic,” he added.

Kayode was eligible to represent Nigeria but opted to continue with Italy after progressing through the country’s youth teams.

The defender revealed that Nigeria had approached him but said switching allegiance was never seriously considered.

“It was a very easy decision. I went through all the youth teams here. Nigeria approached me, but I never thought about changing national teams,” Kayode told Football Italia.

“I think Italy have always been a great national team, and playing here is an honour.”

Kayode began his senior club career in Italy before moving to England. Brentford initially signed him on loan from Fiorentina for €500,000 in January 2025, with an option to make the transfer permanent.

Following his performances during the loan spell, Brentford completed his permanent transfer for €17.5m at the end of the campaign.

His impressive international debut now adds another milestone to Kayode’s rapidly developing career, with the defender making a strong early case for a regular place in Italy’s senior setup.
