Honeywell Technologies has been selected by Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote to provide engineering services, technology licensing and equipment for a planned 700,000-barrel-per-day oil refinery in Kenya.

The $16 billion project in Lamu County is expected to supply diesel, petrol and aviation fuel to Kenya and other countries across East Africa, as the region seeks to reduce its dependence on imported refined petroleum products.

Honeywell’s involvement builds on its existing partnership with Dangote at the company’s refinery in Lagos, where it is supporting upgrades designed to increase processing capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day. Honeywell said its existing engineering designs could help shorten the development timeline for the Kenyan facility.

Construction of the Kenyan refinery formally began on Wednesday, with completion targeted for 2030. Dangote has offered regional governments a combined 30% stake in the project, while the facility is expected to support the development of petrochemical industries and create more than 50,000 jobs.

The project is also linked to Kenya’s wider plans to develop Lamu Port as a major transport and trade corridor connecting the country’s northern regions with neighbouring states. However, conservation groups and some local residents have raised concerns over potential environmental effects, with legal challenges already before the courts.
