EXPLAINER: What You Need To Know About 4th Extension Of 2025 Budget

The National Assembly has approved a fourth extension of the implementation period of the capital component of the 2025 budget, allowing the Federal Government to continue implementing outstanding capital projects beyond the previous deadline.

The extension gives Ministries, Departments and Agencies more time to complete projects captured in the 2025 capital budget and utilise funds already appropriated for them.

The 2025 budget was initially expected to run within the normal budget cycle. However, the implementation deadline for its capital component has been extended several times because a number of projects remained incomplete.

The latest extension moves the deadline to December 31, 2026. This means government agencies can continue implementing eligible capital projects under the 2025 budget until the new deadline, subject to the necessary legal and administrative processes.

The extension is intended to prevent the abandonment of ongoing projects and allow government agencies to complete projects for which funds have already been provided.

However, repeated extensions have also raised concerns about delays in budget implementation, accountability and fiscal planning. Prolonged implementation periods can make it more difficult to monitor government spending and distinguish between different budget cycles.

The fourth extension therefore provides additional time for capital projects to be completed, while placing greater responsibility on government agencies to ensure that appropriated funds are properly utilised and projects are delivered.
