Former Brazil international and AC Milan striker Alexandre Pato has joined the board of Northampton Town following the completion of the club’s takeover by Sports Alpha Capital.
Sports Alpha Capital acquired a 70 percent shareholding in Northampton Town Ventures Limited, the company that owns the majority stake in the League Two club. Existing owners David Bower, Nigel Le Quesne and Kelvin Thomas will retain a combined 30 percent stake.
The takeover was approved by the Independent Football Regulator and the English Football League earlier this month.
Pato, 37, is one of the investors in Sports Alpha Capital and will serve as a director on the Northampton board. He retired from professional football last year after a career that included spells with AC Milan and Chelsea.
The former striker spent five and a half years at AC Milan, scoring 63 goals in 150 appearances and helping the Italian club win the Serie A title during the 2010/11 season. He also earned 27 caps for Brazil.
The ownership change comes after Northampton were relegated to League Two last season. The club has appointed Chris Hogg as manager and made several additions to its squad during the summer transfer window.
Kelvin Thomas has stepped down as chairman but will remain a shareholder and director. Joao Xavier and Tim Chamberlain will become co-chairmen.
The new ownership group said it has ambitious plans for Northampton while stressing the importance of financial sustainability and maintaining strong links with supporters and the local community.
