The Nigerian Army has activated three new battalions as part of efforts to strengthen security operations and improve the protection of communities in Zamfara State.
The development is part of the Army’s broader restructuring and expansion of its operational capacity across the country. The move is aimed at increasing troop presence, improving response to security threats and enhancing coordination in areas affected by banditry.
Zamfara remains within the area of responsibility of the Army’s 8 Division, headquartered in Sokoto, which covers Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states.
The Army has also been implementing a wider expansion of its force structure, with the Federal Government approving an increase from eight to 12 divisions and the recruitment of 28,000 additional personnel.
The restructuring is intended to expand the Army’s operational footprint and improve its ability to respond to security challenges across different parts of the country.
The activation of additional formations is expected to provide more troops for operations against bandits and other criminal groups operating in Zamfara and neighbouring areas.
Security operations in the North West have recently involved coordinated efforts by the military, police and other security agencies to prevent armed groups from exploiting state borders and remote communities.
