The National Assembly has announced plans to translate Nigerian laws into Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba to improve citizens’ understanding of legislation and strengthen access to legal information.
The initiative is expected to make important laws more accessible to Nigerians who may have limited understanding of English, the country’s official language.
The move is also aimed at promoting inclusiveness and encouraging greater public awareness of the laws governing the country.
Legislative documents are currently primarily produced in English, which can make it difficult for some citizens to fully understand their rights, responsibilities and obligations under various laws.
The translation project is expected to cover selected laws and legislative materials, with the National Assembly working towards making them available in the three major Nigerian languages.
The initiative is part of broader efforts to improve public engagement with the legislative process and ensure that citizens can better understand policies and laws passed by their representatives.
Stakeholders have continued to call for greater accessibility of government information, particularly in a multilingual country such as Nigeria.
