Abdulmumeen Jimoh successfully defended his Division A title at the 2026 Lekki Scrabble Club Classics after emerging champion at the tournament in Lagos.
Jimoh, who also won the competition last year, secured another victory on Sunday to make it back-to-back titles at the prestigious event.
His triumph earned him the championship trophy and a $1,000 cash prize after another impressive display against a strong field of competitors.
Speaking after his victory, Jimoh said he approached the tournament calmly and avoided placing unnecessary pressure on himself throughout the competition.
“I played each game as it came. I didn’t give myself the pressure,” he said.
The champion will now shift his attention to preparations for the African Scrabble Championship scheduled to hold in Monrovia, Liberia, in October.
“I have to start preparation and make sure I tighten all the loose ends from this tournament,” Jimoh added.
Jimoh also dedicated the victory to his late elder brother, who introduced him to the game and played an important role in his journey in Scrabble.
“This win means a lot to me,” the champion said.
More than 200 players participated in the tournament across various categories, with Division A and Division B featuring the senior competitors.
Frank Ishiekwene emerged champion of Division B, while Abdulsalam Toyyibaht claimed the Under-12 title.
The competition also featured a children’s category, reflecting organisers’ continued efforts to encourage young players and strengthen the future of Scrabble in Nigeria.
The Lekki Scrabble Club Classics has become a notable fixture on the Nigerian Scrabble calendar, providing players with quality competition and valuable preparation ahead of major domestic and international events.
For Jimoh, the successful title defence provides an added boost as he prepares to compete against some of Africa’s leading Scrabble players in Monrovia.
