The Lagos State High Court has fixed October 12, 2026, to rule on an application by Eurapharma Care Services Nigeria Limited, operators of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, seeking to halt the coroner’s inquest into the death of Nkanu, son of Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie.
Justice Aishat Opesanwo fixed the date after hearing arguments on the hospital’s request for judicial review of proceedings before the coroner. Eurapharma is seeking orders to quash decisions already taken in connection with the inquest and prevent Coroner Atinuke Adetunji from continuing with the proceedings.
One of the hospital’s major arguments concerns the cremation of Nkanu’s remains. Its counsel also challenged the proposed order requiring hospital personnel to present evidence before the deceased’s family had formally presented its allegations.
Counsel to Adichie and her husband, Ivara Esege, urged the court to dismiss the application, describing it as premature. The family argued that there was no reviewable decision by the coroner that warranted the intervention of the High Court.
Nkanu died on January 7, 2026, at Euracare in Lagos. The hospital has denied allegations of medical negligence, while the inquest is intended to examine the circumstances surrounding his death.
