Channel 4 has ruled out a merger with the BBC, despite plans for the two British public broadcasters to expand cooperation and share more content.

Channel 4’s chief executive said the broadcaster would remain a separate organisation, rejecting speculation that closer collaboration could eventually lead to a full merger.

The comments come as both broadcasters explore ways to work more closely in response to intense competition from global streaming platforms and changing viewing habits. Greater content sharing could allow them to reach wider audiences while managing production and distribution costs.

Channel 4, which operates as a publicly owned but commercially funded broadcaster, has faced significant financial pressure as traditional television advertising has weakened and audiences have increasingly moved towards digital platforms.

The BBC is also undergoing changes to its funding and operating model as it prepares for the next stage of its charter arrangements.

While the broadcasters may increase cooperation in areas such as programming and distribution, maintaining separate identities and operations remains central to Channel 4’s position.

The development highlights the broader challenges facing traditional public-service broadcasters as they compete with major streaming companies for audiences, advertising and production talent.
