Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after representing President Bola Tinubu at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
Shettima departed Abuja on September 20 with a mandate from President Tinubu to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the annual global gathering.
During the visit, the Vice President delivered Nigeria’s national statement at the General Debate, where the country renewed its call for reforms to the UN Security Council, including permanent African representation. Nigeria also advocated fairer global financing, stronger climate support and deeper multilateral cooperation.
Shettima also participated in the Third High-Level Roundtable of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group, where Nigeria pushed for greater processing, manufacturing and value addition to Africa’s mineral resources rather than continued reliance on raw mineral exports.
At a high-level education financing event co-hosted by Nigeria and Italy, he reaffirmed the country’s commitment to education as an investment in productivity and human capital development, while supporting the Global Partnership for Education’s $5 billion financing campaign.
The Vice President also met with Nigerians in the diaspora, ECOWAS officials and UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed before returning to Nigeria
