The Abia State Police Command has recovered 28 human skulls and other human bones from suspected criminal camps in forests around Umuaku, Isuochi, and Nneato communities in Umunneochi Local Government Area of the state.
The discovery was made during an intelligence led operation conducted on Sunday, September 27, as part of efforts to dismantle suspected criminal camps and flush out kidnappers and other criminal elements operating in the area.
The operation involved personnel from the Violent Crime Response Unit, Anti Kidnapping Unit, Anti Cultism Unit, Intelligence Response Unit, Rapid Response Squad and Isuochi Police Headquarters.
According to the police spokesperson, Maureen Chinaka, the suspected criminals fled their camps after sighting the security operatives, leaving the locations deserted.
The officers subsequently searched the camps and discovered 28 human skulls and other bones. Some of the remains were reportedly decomposed.
The police said the remains were suspected to belong to people who may have been kidnapped and taken into the forest, but investigations are ongoing to establish their identities and determine the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
No arrest has been made in connection with the discovery, as the suspected criminals reportedly escaped before the arrival of the police.
The Commissioner of Police in Abia State, Wilfred Afolabi, said efforts had been intensified to apprehend the fleeing suspects, while security monitoring of the area would continue.
The command also urged residents to provide useful information that could assist security agencies in tackling kidnapping and other criminal activities in the state.
