Ex-commissioner demands power rotation, governorship for Kogi West

A former Kogi State Commissioner for Information, Dr Tom Ohikere, has called for the rotation of the governorship seat to Kogi West in the 2028 election, arguing that equity and fairness require the senatorial district to produce the next governor.

Ohikere, who is also the Convener of the Coalition for Better Kogi State, made the demand in a statement issued in Lokoja, the state capital.

He argued that Kogi East had produced governors for about 17 years, while Kogi Central had governed the state for about 10 years, leaving Kogi West without a year in the governorship position since the creation of the state.

The former commissioner said his position was based on fairness rather than ethnic or sectional interests. He maintained that Kogi West had the human and economic resources required to govern the state.

Ohikere also criticised the planned Kogi Unity and Power Rotation Summit scheduled for September 30 and October 1, 2026, arguing that serving government officials should not moderate discussions on power rotation because they are beneficiaries of the existing political arrangement.

He said the Coalition for Better Kogi State would not participate in the planned summit and would instead organise a Kogi Equity, Unity and Rotation National Summit in Abuja in October.

According to him, the proposed summit would involve stakeholders from the three senatorial districts and seek to develop a Kogi Charter of Equity for presentation to political parties and other relevant stakeholders.

Ohikere acknowledged that power rotation is not a constitutional requirement but said zoning and political agreements remain part of Nigeria’s political practice.
