Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has urged northern presidential hopefuls to defer their ambitions until 2031, saying Nigeria’s presidency should continue to rotate between the North and South.
Yusuf made the call on Sunday at the Kano Government House during the unveiling of 50 vehicles donated by Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, to support All Progressives Congress, APC, campaign mobilisation in the state ahead of the 2027 elections.
The governor said presidential power should rotate between the two regions, with each given the opportunity to produce a president for two consecutive terms.
He argued that allowing an administration to complete two terms would provide sufficient time to implement major policies and development programmes.
Yusuf urged Nigerians to support President Bola Tinubu to complete a second term, saying this would allow the South to complete what he described as its two term cycle before power returns to the North in 2031.
He therefore called on northern political stakeholders to exercise patience and defer their presidential ambitions until after the 2027 to 2031 period.
Yusuf said rotational presidency could promote fairness, equity, national cohesion, mutual trust and a sense of belonging among Nigerians from different regions.
He also urged politicians and political parties to conduct peaceful and issue based campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The governor called on political actors to focus on policies, programmes and development plans rather than personal attacks and inflammatory rhetoric.
