Thailand’s cabinet has approved September 28 and 29 as special holidays for civil servants in Bangkok and three surrounding provinces as authorities respond to severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall.
The government said the measure is intended to reduce travel and ease traffic disruptions, while allowing essential official duties to continue where necessary.
The decision follows nearly 300 mm of rainfall recorded in Bangkok over 48 hours. The flooding affected major roads and left some vehicles partly submerged, while the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration declared the capital a disaster-affected area. Floodwaters began receding in several areas on Sunday as rainfall eased, although some residents remained stranded in their homes.
The emergency holidays could also affect the timing of a court ruling concerning electoral ballots used in Thailand’s February election. The court had not announced whether the ruling would be delayed.
The flooding has added pressure on authorities to maintain essential services while limiting movement in affected areas.
