Experts Warn Trump Allies Could Seek to Disrupt US Midterm Vote Counting

Election experts and former US government officials have raised concerns that the period immediately after the November midterm elections could become a flashpoint for disputes over vote counting and election results.

The concerns centre on the post-election “counting window”, when ballots are still being processed and results in closely contested races may remain unresolved. The warnings come less than six weeks before Americans are due to vote, with control of Congress at stake.

The Trump administration recently faced a setback after the Supreme Court rejected its attempt to impose sweeping restrictions on mail-in ballots. Despite that ruling, experts cited in the report fear that Trump and his allies could use the counting period to amplify unsubstantiated claims of irregularities if results are unfavourable to them.

The issue has renewed attention on the security of the vote-counting process, particularly because mail ballots are often among the last votes to be processed in some states.

The 2026 midterm elections are scheduled for November 3, with all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 Senate seats being contested.

Election officials and voting-rights groups are expected to face heightened scrutiny as counting begins and unofficial results emerge.
