Suspected Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists have attacked Wumbi community in Kala-Balge Local Government Area of Borno State, killing a local vigilante commander and four other people, while several others sustained injuries.
The attack, which reportedly occurred on September 21, 2026, was confirmed by the Borno State Police Command through its Public Relations Officer, ASP Kenneth Daso. The police said a vigilante leader and four others were killed during the incident.
Wumbi, an agrarian community close to the Cameroon border, had largely been deserted because of persistent insecurity. Some residents had recently returned to cultivate their farms under the protection of members of the Civilian Joint Task Force and local vigilantes.
Sources said the attackers arrived in large numbers, armed with rifles, improvised explosive devices and other weapons, forcing many farmers to flee. The vigilante commander reportedly remained behind and was subsequently killed.
The situation became more deadly when CJTF members, vigilantes and civilians later mobilised to recover the commander’s remains. According to reports, an explosive device planted around the body was detonated, killing four additional people and injuring several others. The details surrounding the attack could not be independently verified.
The incident has renewed concerns over the security situation in communities around Kala-Balge, particularly areas where residents have begun returning to their farms despite the continued threat from insurgent groups.
