Australia is investigating how a shipment of F-35 fighter jet components intended for the United States was diverted to Hong Kong, raising concerns over the security of technology linked to one of the world’s most advanced military aircraft.
Defence Minister Richard Marles confirmed that Australian authorities are working with the United States and Lockheed Martin to establish what happened to the components after they left Australia. The parts were reportedly being transported to the US for repairs when their route was unexpectedly changed.
The shipment reportedly included an F-35 cockpit canopy containing radar-resistant technology. However, Marles said Australia’s understanding was that the missing equipment did not constitute sensitive technology. US authorities and the F-35 programme office have confirmed the shipment issue and are working to recover the components while investigating the circumstances surrounding their diversion.
The incident has attracted attention because Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China. There is currently no public evidence that Chinese authorities obtained or examined the components, and the exact location and custody of the parts remain unclear.
Australia operates 72 F-35 aircraft and serves as a major regional hub for the programme’s spare parts and maintenance network.
