Fulham manager Álvaro Arbeloa has praised Calvin Bassey after the Nigeria international produced another impressive display in the Cottagers’ 1-1 draw against Manchester United.
Bassey started the encounter and completed the full 90 minutes as Fulham recovered from behind to claim a point through a late equaliser.
The defender also played a role in Fulham’s opening goal after winning back possession and carrying the ball forward before his effort was saved. The resulting rebound eventually led to Manchester United defender Lisandro Martínez putting the ball into his own net.
Despite the unusual circumstances surrounding the goal, Arbeloa was particularly impressed by Bassey’s defensive contribution, composure and ability to remain effective in possession throughout the contest.
“Calvin is one of the best defenders in the Premier League; he plays at a high level with and without the ball. He is doing so well,” Arbeloa said after the match.
Bassey’s performance came as Fulham continued their search for their first Premier League victory of the season under Arbeloa.
Fulham took the lead in the second half through Martínez’s own goal, but Manchester United rescued a point late in the contest when Matheus Cunha’s effort took a deflection before finding the net.
Although Fulham were unable to hold on for all three points, Arbeloa expressed satisfaction with the overall performance and again highlighted Bassey’s contribution at the back.
The Fulham coach also pointed to the blend of youth and experience within his squad, with Bassey featuring alongside fellow Nigeria international Alex Iwobi.
For Bassey, the latest performance provides further momentum as he continues to establish himself as an important member of the Fulham defence.
With the international break approaching, the defender’s consistent displays also provide a timely boost as Nigeria prepare for their upcoming assignments.
