Google has been fined €403 million (£348 million) by Ireland’s Data Protection Commission for breaching European Union privacy rules over its handling of users’ location data.
The regulator said an investigation found Google had unlawfully processed location information through services including Web & App Activity, Location History and Location Accuracy.
The investigation, launched in 2020, also found shortcomings in transparency and the retention of location data for longer than necessary. The regulator said users could have been unaware that their location information was being used to influence advertising or infer personal interests.
