The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) chapter, has declared an indefinite strike over what it described as the non-payment of some salaries and allowances owed to its members.
The decision followed concerns over outstanding payments and the failure to fully resolve issues relating to members’ remuneration. The union said the industrial action would remain in effect until the affected payments and other outstanding matters are addressed.
The development is expected to affect academic activities at the institution, including lectures, examinations and other university programmes, as members of the union withdraw their services.
The UNIPORT ASUU chapter is expected to engage the relevant authorities on the outstanding financial issues in an effort to reach a resolution and pave the way for the suspension of the strike.
The latest development adds to concerns over funding, staff welfare and the payment of outstanding entitlements within Nigeria’s public university system.
