A Nigerian woman residing in Massachusetts has been arrested and charged by U.S. federal authorities over allegations that she illegally registered to vote and cast ballots in U.S. elections despite not being an American citizen.

Prosecutors allege that Gladys Adaeze Okafor registered to vote in 2022 and again in 2023, falsely declaring on registration forms that she was a U.S. citizen. Authorities further allege that she voted in the 2022 midterm election and the 2024 presidential primary.

Court documents reportedly state that Okafor became a lawful permanent resident of the United States in December 2022 but has never obtained U.S. citizenship. Federal law generally prohibits noncitizens from voting in federal elections.

The allegations remain unproven in court, and being charged does not constitute a conviction. If convicted of the federal offense, she could face a fine and a potential prison sentence.
