Doma United coach Deji Ayeni says the newly promoted side are focused on making a strong impression in the Nigeria Premier Football League after opening the 2026/27 campaign with a perfect record.
The Savannah Tigers have won all three of their opening matches without conceding a goal, with their latest success coming in a convincing 2-0 victory over former champions Enyimba in Gombe on Saturday.
The impressive start has placed Doma United at the top of the early NPFL standings with nine points, although Ayeni is refusing to get carried away by their position so early in the season.
The coach stressed that the club’s immediate objective is to compete strongly, develop a competitive identity and establish themselves in the top flight rather than place unnecessary pressure on the players with premature title expectations.
“It is too early to judge any team at the moment, but the most important thing is that our set objective is to make a very good impression in the league,” Ayeni said.
He added that while winning the league would be welcomed if it eventually becomes a realistic possibility, Doma United’s priority is to remain competitive and make their presence felt among Nigeria’s top-flight clubs.
“And if we are to win the league title, so be it. But we want to compete well and be at the top and want to make an impression on Nigerian football and stakeholders,” he added.
Doma United’s victory over Enyimba was particularly significant for Ayeni, who previously coached the Aba-based club before taking charge of the Savannah Tigers.
The coach revealed that his knowledge of Enyimba helped him prepare his players for what was expected to be a difficult encounter.
“Concerning the game against Enyimba, it was a game that everybody had been waiting for, and I am happy that we prepared well, and the players responded very well,” Ayeni said.
“Don’t forget that Enyimba is a team I coached before joining Doma United. So Enyimba is my former team, and I know the club very well.”
The result extended Doma United’s unbeaten run and maintained their flawless defensive record after three matches, underlining the organisation that has characterised their start to life back in the NPFL.
With confidence growing inside the camp, the Savannah Tigers will now seek to maintain their momentum when league action resumes, while Ayeni continues to build a side capable of competing consistently at the highest level of Nigerian domestic football.
