A Niger State High Court sitting in Minna has sentenced 27-year-old Hussaini Suleiman to seven years in prison for raping an eight-year-old girl.
Suleiman was convicted by Justice Binta Bawa after pleading guilty to the offence, which occurred at his residence behind the Prison Quarters in Minna, Niger State.
The case was referred to the Niger State Command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) by the Niger State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps on April 16, 2026, following a report concerning the rape of the child.
Suleiman was subsequently arraigned before Court 8 of the Niger State High Court on September 10, where he admitted committing the offence and entered a guilty plea.
The conviction comes amid continuing concern over sexual violence against children across Nigeria. Cases involving the defilement of minors have been reported in several states, with law enforcement agencies and child protection authorities facing increasing pressure to ensure that perpetrators are brought before the courts.
The latest case also highlights the importance of prompt reporting and intervention when children are subjected to sexual abuse. The involvement of security agencies and NAPTIP in the Minna case ultimately led to the prosecution and conviction of the suspect.
Authorities have repeatedly urged parents, guardians and communities to report suspected cases of child abuse rather than allowing them to remain hidden because of fear, stigma or family pressure.
Child protection advocates have also called for stronger enforcement of laws against sexual offences, arguing that swift prosecution and appropriate punishment are necessary to protect vulnerable children and deter potential offenders.
The seven-year sentence handed down by the court marks the conclusion of the case against Suleiman, while the victim’s identity remains protected because she is a minor.
The case serves as another reminder of the vulnerability of children to sexual abuse and the need for families, communities, schools and law enforcement agencies to remain vigilant.
