A newly formed anti-immigration movement known as the Patriot Platform has triggered growing concern in the United Kingdom after staging a series of highly organised protests involving masked, black-clad demonstrators and confrontational action around ports.
The movement, led by Daniel Thomas, popularly known as Danny Tommo, emerged into the spotlight last weekend when dozens of masked men gathered in Dover, chanting anti-immigration slogans and blocking parts of the busy port area.
The demonstration was followed by another protest in Portsmouth and later a confrontation in Dover involving protesters attempting to prevent a boat believed to be carrying asylum seekers from landing. The incidents have raised questions about whether a new and more organised form of far-right activism is developing in Britain.
The Patriot Platform has distinguished itself through its use of coordinated social media campaigns, livestreams and rapidly organised gatherings. Thomas has reportedly spent months travelling around Britain, bringing together smaller anti-migrant protest groups and encouraging supporters to form what he describes as a wider resistance movement.
Unlike some established far-right organisations, the group does not currently operate with a detailed political manifesto. Instead, its messaging focuses heavily on opposition to immigration, claims that traditional British values are under threat and calls for supporters to take more direct action.
The appearance of masked protesters has been one of the most controversial aspects of the movement. Political figures, including Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, have criticised demonstrators for covering their faces, while the government has indicated that police should make greater use of powers allowing face coverings to be restricted at protests.
Security researchers and analysts have warned that the movement’s ability to mobilise supporters quickly through social media could make it difficult for authorities to anticipate future demonstrations.
Thomas, who previously worked as a bodyguard for far-right activist Tommy Robinson, has a criminal conviction for attempted kidnapping dating back to 2016. He was sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty. He is also due to appear in court over allegations linked to an incident in Dover earlier this year.
The movement has also attracted attention for its Christian imagery and rhetoric. Protesters have been seen wearing crosses while chanting Christian phrases alongside anti-immigration slogans, a combination that has drawn criticism from figures within the Church of England.
The Church has sought to distance itself from the movement’s use of Christian symbols, with critics arguing that religious imagery is being used to reinforce an anti-migrant political message.
The week took another turn when Thomas launched a campaign concerning his mother, after claiming that information published about her had left her feeling unsafe. He brought supporters to the headquarters of a national newspaper and later appealed for donations to help his mother relocate.
The fundraising campaign had reportedly raised more than £62,000 by Friday, although some supporters and online commentators questioned the appeal and accused Thomas of using the controversy to raise money. Thomas has rejected such criticism and maintained that his mother needed to move because she no longer felt safe.
Authorities and local politicians are now watching the Patriot Platform closely, particularly because of its ability to mobilise groups at short notice.
Whether the movement can maintain its momentum remains uncertain, but its emergence has already added another layer to Britain’s increasingly fragmented and confrontational debate over immigration, protest and national identity.
