An Italian technology collective is preparing to shut down its digital services following its designation by the United States as a terrorist organization, a move that has disrupted the group’s operations and raised concerns among digital-rights advocates.

The collective, Autistici/Inventati (A/I), provides online infrastructure and services including email accounts, websites, mailing lists and blogs. The group says the U.S. designation has triggered financial and operational restrictions that have made it increasingly difficult to continue providing its services.

A/I has rejected allegations linking it to violent extremist activities, maintaining that its role is primarily to provide independent digital infrastructure for activists, organizations and other users.

The shutdown could affect thousands of users and online projects hosted through the collective’s infrastructure, highlighting the wider impact that international sanctions and terrorism designations can have on independent technology organizations.

The case has also intensified debate over digital freedom, online infrastructure and the responsibilities of technology providers when their services are used by politically controversial or extremist groups.

For A/I, the decision marks a major disruption to an organization that has operated for years at the intersection of technology, privacy and digital activism.
