Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to his 12 year career with the Germany national team.
The 33 year old centre back confirmed his decision on Tuesday, September 1, saying he had reached the point where he wanted to step aside and allow a younger generation of German players to take over.
Rüdiger made his senior Germany debut in May 2014 and went on to earn 86 international appearances. He scored three goals during his international career and became one of the most experienced and influential defenders in the national team.
The defender represented Germany at three FIFA World Cups and two European Championships. His final appearance came at the 2026 World Cup, when Germany were eliminated by Paraguay in the round of 32.
Although Germany failed to win a major title during Rüdiger’s time as an established member of the national team, he was part of the squad that won the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia.
Rüdiger was not included in Germany’s squad for the 2014 World Cup, despite making his international debut shortly before the tournament. He subsequently became an important figure for the national team and featured prominently at major tournaments over the following years.
His decision comes shortly after Germany’s disappointing campaign at the 2026 World Cup and as the national team begins a new phase under head coach Jürgen Klopp.
Rüdiger said his decision followed a period of reflection and was motivated partly by a desire to make room for younger players. He also indicated that he would now concentrate fully on his club career with Real Madrid.
The defender joined Real Madrid in 2022 after leaving Chelsea and has established himself as a key member of the Spanish giants’ defence. During his time in Madrid, he has won major domestic and European honours, including the Champions League and La Liga.
His international retirement means Germany will now have to plan for life without one of its most experienced defenders as the team prepares for a new generation.
Rüdiger thanked his teammates, coaches, staff and supporters for their roles throughout his international career, describing his time with the national team as a particularly important chapter of his life.
After more than a decade wearing the Germany shirt, the defender will now focus exclusively on club football and his remaining years at Real Madrid.
