Nigeria’s Junior Female Yellow Greens opened their campaign at the 2027 ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier Division 1 on a winning note, edging Uganda U-19 Women by four wickets in a tense, low-scoring encounter in Tanzania.
Nigeria produced an impressive bowling display after Uganda won the toss and opted to bat first, restricting their opponents to 59 for seven in 20 overs.
Shadiah Gilingish Nabulime was Uganda’s top scorer with 22 runs from 34 balls, while Jimia Abdallah Mohamed added 13 runs from 25 deliveries as Nigeria’s bowlers maintained pressure throughout the innings.
Chisom Okpe was outstanding with the ball, taking two wickets for just four runs from her four overs. Peace Usen also claimed two wickets, conceding 12 runs in her spell as the Nigerian attack kept Uganda from building a competitive total.
Needing 60 runs for victory, Nigeria appeared to be in control of the chase before Uganda’s Tino Sarah produced a superb individual performance.
Sarah claimed five wickets for 13 runs in four overs, including two maiden overs, putting the Nigerian batters under considerable pressure and keeping Uganda in contention.
However, the Junior Female Yellow Greens remained composed despite losing wickets at regular intervals and eventually completed the chase to secure a crucial four-wicket victory.
Omosigho Eguakun provided the foundation for Nigeria’s innings with a patient 24 off 29 balls, while captain Christabel Chukwuonye made a valuable contribution with 13 runs from 10 deliveries, including three boundaries.
The victory gives Nigeria an important early advantage in their bid to qualify for the 2027 ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup.
The Junior Female Yellow Greens will face Malawi in their next group match as they look to strengthen their position and move closer to the semi-finals.
Nigeria will then round off their group-stage campaign against hosts Tanzania on Wednesday, September 2.
A top-two finish in the group will guarantee Nigeria a place in the semi-finals, where they will meet one of the qualifiers from Group B, which features Kenya, Namibia, Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
The eventual winner of the Africa Qualifier will join South Africa as one of the continent’s representatives at the 2027 ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup.
South Africa have already secured their place at the global tournament after finishing among the top four teams at the previous edition, which was won by India.
For Nigeria, the immediate objective will be to build on the opening victory, maintain their momentum and secure a strong position in the race for another appearance on the world stage.
