Nigerian striker Terem Moffi has joined his new Hamburg teammates in training after completing his permanent transfer from French club Nice, with the Bundesliga side backing him to make a significant impact in attack.

Moffi completed his move to Hamburg on Monday and has been handed the prestigious No. 9 shirt ahead of the new season.

Hamburg sporting board member Kathleen Krüger believes the 27-year-old forward is well suited to the club’s plans and will provide additional quality and experience to the attack.

“Terem is an excellent fit to our approach. His signing gives us greater depth and variability at centre forward and increases our quality,” Krüger said.

She also highlighted Moffi’s international experience and his potential influence on the club’s younger players.

“His career brings great experience at international level and can pass that on to our young players,” she added.

Moffi, who spent last season on loan at Porto, said his decision to join Hamburg was strengthened by his father’s enthusiastic reaction when he learned of the club’s interest.

“Even though HSV spent a few years in the second division, the club is still a big name, and that is the case all over the world,” Moffi said through the club’s website.

He recalled telling his father about Hamburg’s interest and being surprised by his immediate recognition of the club.

“When I told my father about the club’s interest, he immediately knew which club I was talking about and was really excited. For me, that was crazy in a positive way.

“That makes me even happier to now be part of the club and its history myself.”

Moffi joined Nice in January 2023 and scored 24 goals in 72 appearances during his spell with the French club.

His most recent season was spent on loan at Porto, where he scored two goals in 15 competitive appearances.

The Nigerian forward also brings European competition experience to Hamburg. He made seven Europa League appearances for Nice and Porto last season and scored during Porto’s 4-1 aggregate victory over VfB Stuttgart in the last 16.

Moffi was not available for Hamburg’s DFB-Pokal first-round encounter against Verl on Monday, with the club winning the match 3-0.

He will now hope to make his Hamburg debut when the club begin their Bundesliga campaign away to Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

The transfer also marks a fresh start for Moffi following a difficult final period at Nice. The striker was among the players targeted by supporters after the club’s team bus was attacked following a defeat to Lorient in November 2025.

With his move to Germany now complete, Moffi will be looking to put that difficult chapter behind him and establish himself as a key figure in Hamburg’s attack.
