The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, MAN, and Transgreen Nigeria Limited have called for increased investment in education and human capital development to drive Nigeria’s economic growth.
The call was made by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Transgreen Nigeria Limited, Pastor Cyprian Orakpo, who said Nigeria’s large population could become a major economic asset if citizens were properly educated and equipped with relevant skills.
Orakpo made the remarks during his 60th birthday celebration in Lagos, where he also unveiled the O’Care Foundation for the Needy, an initiative aimed at supporting vulnerable Nigerians and communities.
He said an educated and productive population would encourage innovation, creativity and industrial development, while helping to reduce unemployment, poverty and insecurity.
According to him, Nigeria’s large population gives the country an advantage in supporting large-scale production and expanding its consumer market, but poor education and widespread deprivation could turn the population into a liability.
He urged the government to prioritise human capital development alongside investments in infrastructure and other sectors, stressing that skilled citizens were essential to sustainable economic development.
The Transgreen chief executive also linked youth involvement in criminal activities to weaknesses in the education system, calling for stronger efforts to provide quality education and opportunities for young Nigerians.
The Director-General of MAN, Segun Ajayi-Kadir, also commended Orakpo for his contributions to the manufacturing sector and his role in the association’s advocacy efforts.
Ajayi-Kadir described him as an exemplary manufacturer and business leader who had contributed recommendations aimed at improving Nigeria’s business environment.
The event also featured the launch of the O’Care Foundation, which will support people in correctional centres who are unable to pay fines after completing their sentences, patients unable to settle medical bills, vulnerable families, small businesses and special-needs institutions.
