U.S. President Donald Trump’s Republican Party is increasingly viewing its first-ever midterm convention in Dallas next month as a critical opportunity to rebuild momentum ahead of the November elections, as voter frustration over the economy and the Iran war threatens Republican control of Congress.
the September 9-10 convention was initially dismissed by some Republican strategists as an unnecessary distraction because it carries no formal party business. But party officials, donors and organizers now see the gathering as a chance to energize Republican voters and refocus attention on Trump’s political agenda.
Republicans plan to highlight Trump’s tax cuts, immigration policies, efforts to lower drug prices and other achievements, while portraying Democrats as increasingly influenced by socialist ideas. Organizers also intend to feature Americans they say have benefited from the administration’s policies.
Trump is expected to dominate the event, a strategy that some Republicans believe could help energize the party’s base. Others warn that putting the president at the center of the convention could backfire because of his low approval ratings and public frustration over the economic effects of the Iran war.
Republican National Committee spokesperson Natalie Baldassarre said the convention would provide the momentum needed to expand the party’s congressional majorities in November.
However, the event presents a dilemma for Republican candidates in competitive races. Reuters contacted campaigns involved in 37 closely contested House races and eight competitive Senate races about whether their candidates planned to attend or speak. Only one campaign gave a substantive response, with Michigan Republican Representative Tom Barrett saying he planned to skip the convention and remain in his district because of his difficult reelection campaign.
Despite the uncertainty, Republican insiders said the convention could help address declining enthusiasm among party voters. Organizers expect about 30,000 attendees, while donor co-chair Ray Washburne said the event had raised $42 million and would be fully funded.
Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to speak on September 9, followed by Trump on September 10. Most of Trump’s Cabinet secretaries are also expected to attend, along with candidates running in competitive races.
Some Republicans remain skeptical that a large rally-style event can significantly change voter sentiment. Strategists argue that unless the convention produces a credible response to concerns over the cost of living, it could have little effect on races far from Texas.
The convention is also expected to serve as a major fundraising and networking event, giving Republican candidates access to donors and national media exposure. The Republican National Committee has already begun selling official convention merchandise, including hats, T-shirts and mugs.
With the November 3 midterm elections approaching, Republicans are hoping the Dallas gathering can strengthen enthusiasm, consolidate support for Trump’s agenda and counter growing Democratic momentum.
