A presidential aide to President Bola Tinubu has criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over his pledge to restore petrol subsidy if elected president in 2027.
The aide described Atiku’s proposal as deceptive and argued that returning to the subsidy regime could undermine Nigeria’s economic recovery.
Atiku, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, had pledged to restore the subsidy, questioning how the savings from its removal had been utilised. He argued that Nigerians had not benefited sufficiently from the policy change.
The development has triggered criticism from the Presidency and the All Progressives Congress, with government officials accusing Atiku of changing his position on subsidy removal for political reasons ahead of the 2027 election.
The fuel subsidy debate is expected to remain a major issue in the 2027 presidential campaign as political parties present competing economic plans to Nigerian voters.
