Danish biosolutions company Novonesis expects results in the second half of 2027 from a joint research project with Novo Nordisk examining whether gut microbiome supplements can provide additional benefits for people taking GLP-1 weight loss drugs.

The companies began their partnership last year to study how the gut microbiome could improve metabolic health and develop synbiotic supplements combining probiotics and prebiotics.

Novonesis CEO Ester Baiget said the research will examine whether such supplements can complement GLP-1 medicines, including Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy. The study will assess effects on blood glucose, cholesterol, the gut microbiome and related biomarkers.

The collaboration comes as drugmakers and food companies seek opportunities created by the rapidly expanding obesity treatment market. Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly are competing for a larger share of the GLP-1 market, while companies such as Nestle are developing nutrition products tailored to people using weight loss medicines.

Novonesis, created through the merger of Novozymes and Chr. Hansen, develops enzymes, microorganisms, probiotics and other nutrition products.
