Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria from his two week leave, resuming duties two days ahead of his scheduled return date of August 20, 2026.
Shettima returned to Abuja on Tuesday evening, August 18, according to highly placed officials who confirmed the development to The PUNCH on Wednesday.
The Vice President, however, was absent from Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.
His early return coincides with the commencement of campaigns for the 2027 general elections on August 19, as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to The PUNCH, Shettima commenced the two week leave on August 6 with the approval of President Tinubu. It was his first official leave since he assumed office in May 2023.
At the time, his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, said the leave would provide an opportunity for study, reflection and intellectual renewal.
Shettima is also the Chairman of the National Economic Council, which comprises state governors, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and other key government officials.
