Bright Osayi-Samuel has made an early statement in his bid to return to the Super Eagles after producing an outstanding performance for Birmingham City in the opening weekend of the new Championship season.
The 28-year-old defender was among Birmingham’s standout players in their goalless draw against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Saturday, combining defensive solidity with an impressive attacking display.
Osayi Samuel recovered possession 16 times during the encounter, the highest tally recorded by any player across the English Football League on the opening weekend.
According to Opta, his 16 recoveries were five more than those of any other player on Matchday One, highlighting his influence in helping Birmingham secure a valuable point away from home.
The Nigerian also won seven of 12 duels, completed two successful dribbles, made one clearance and registered 74 touches during the match.
His impressive statistics could strengthen his chances of earning a recall to the Super Eagles when head coach Eric Chelle names his squad for Nigeria’s September fixtures.
Nigeria are scheduled to begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau, with Chelle expected to announce his squad in the coming weeks.
Osayi-Samuel has previously been an important option for Nigeria at right-back, particularly when first-choice defender Ola Aina has been unavailable.
Aina has not featured for the Super Eagles since the 2026 World Cup qualifier against South Africa in September 2025 and subsequently missed the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after suffering a hamstring injury.
The Nottingham Forest defender has since returned to full fitness and featured during pre-season, giving Chelle another experienced option at right-back ahead of the upcoming qualifiers.
Osayi-Samuel, however, has wasted little time in making his own case at club level.
His dominant performance against Sheffield United provided a timely reminder of his defensive ability, athleticism and versatility, qualities that could prove valuable to the Super Eagles.
Having last represented Nigeria during the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, the Birmingham City defender will hope his strong start to the Championship season convinces Chelle to hand him another opportunity with the national team.
