Gaming Platform to Strengthen Protections for Children

Australia’s internet safety regulator has secured a court-enforceable undertaking from Roblox requiring the gaming platform to strengthen protections against grooming and sexual exploitation.

The action followed testing by the eSafety Commissioner, which found that adult strangers could still contact children, while young users’ profiles and connections remained visible despite existing safety measures.

Under the agreement, Roblox has three months to introduce stronger safeguards, including restricting contact between unknown adults and children, making children’s accounts private by default, and improving complaint reporting and notification systems.

The company will also undergo an independent audit of its safety measures, including its age-estimation technology. If Roblox fails to comply with the undertaking, Australia’s eSafety Commissioner can seek enforcement through the Federal Court.

The agreement represents another step in Australia’s broader effort to hold major online platforms accountable for protecting children in digital spaces.
