Iran’s ambassador to Kuwait has met four Iranian nationals who have been detained in the Gulf state for three months, Iranian state media reported on Tuesday, amid growing tensions over their case.
Iran’s embassy in Kuwait said the ambassador was briefed on the four men’s health and latest condition during the meeting.
The development comes days after Mohammad Baqerzadeh, commander of Iran’s Committee for the Search for Missing Persons under the Armed Forces General Staff, accused Kuwait of withholding information about the detainees.
Iran said in May that the four men, whom it described as being affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, were on a maritime patrol when a navigation problem caused them to enter Kuwaiti territorial waters.
Kuwait, however, has alleged that the men were suspected of planning hostile activities against the country.
The detention has added to tensions between Tehran and Kuwait as Iran continues to seek information about the status of its nationals and other military personnel involved in the wider regional conflict.
Iran’s embassy did not provide further details about the men’s legal status or whether Kuwait had agreed to any arrangements regarding their release.
