At least 21 people have been killed and several others injured after armed attackers invaded Binper community in Bwai District of Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State in the early hours of Tuesday.

The attackers reportedly moved from house to house during the overnight raid, targeting residents while they were asleep. The incident has renewed concerns over the security situation in parts of Plateau State, where rural communities have continued to face deadly attacks.

The attack occurred in the early hours of August 18, with residents reporting that the assailants entered homes and opened fire on occupants. Several people were also said to have sustained injuries during the violence.

The death toll was reported at 21, although authorities and other relevant agencies may provide further clarification as investigations continue.

The latest incident has caused fear and uncertainty among residents of the affected community, particularly following previous attacks recorded in parts of Mangu and other local government areas of Plateau State.

Security concerns have remained a major challenge in several communities across the state, with residents repeatedly calling for stronger protection and faster security responses to prevent attackers from gaining access to vulnerable settlements.

The attack also highlights the continued vulnerability of rural communities, where residents often have limited access to immediate security intervention when violence occurs at night.

Following the incident, attention is expected to shift towards identifying the perpetrators and determining the circumstances that allowed the attackers to operate in the community.

Residents and community leaders are also expected to demand increased security presence in the area to prevent further attacks and reassure those who have been affected by the latest violence.

The recurring attacks have had consequences beyond the loss of lives, including displacement, destruction of property and disruption of economic activities. Farmers and other residents in affected communities often face difficulties returning to their homes and livelihoods after such incidents.

The Plateau State Government and security agencies have repeatedly condemned attacks on communities and pledged measures to protect residents and bring perpetrators to justice.

The latest killings are likely to intensify calls for a more effective security strategy in Plateau State, particularly in communities considered vulnerable to attacks.

For residents of Binper and surrounding settlements, the immediate priority remains the protection of lives, assistance for those injured and measures to prevent another attack.

The incident adds to a growing list of deadly attacks that have continued to test security efforts in Plateau State, underscoring the need for sustained security operations, intelligence gathering and stronger community protection mechanisms.
