Apple will introduce a 5% commission on digital transactions made through apps distributed outside its App Store in the European Union, as part of changes aimed at complying with the bloc’s Digital Markets Act.

Under the new system, effective October 1, apps using alternative payment systems will face a 20% commission, or 10% for eligible small businesses. Apps distributed through alternative marketplaces or directly from the web will be subject to the 5% commission.

Apple said the changes replace its previous, more complex fee structure and resolve disagreements with the European Commission over its App Store policies.

The European Commission welcomed the changes but said it would monitor their implementation.
