The National Association of University Students (NAUS) has commended President Bola Tinubu for what it described as a demonstration of democratic leadership during the 2026 Osun State governorship election.

The student body also congratulated Governor Ademola Adeleke on his victory, urging him to use his renewed mandate to improve the lives of young people and residents across the state.

In a statement signed by its National President, Meshach Nwankwo, NAUS said Tinubu demonstrated that democratic interests could rise above partisan considerations by allowing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to carry out its constitutional responsibilities.

The association also commended INEC, electoral officials, security agencies, political parties, candidates and the people of Osun State for their participation in the election.

NAUS praised the transparency of the result-uploading and collation process, particularly the use of the INEC Result Viewing Portal, which it said allowed citizens to follow the electoral process.

While congratulating Adeleke, the student group urged him to regard his victory as a fresh responsibility rather than merely a political triumph.

It called on the governor to prioritise education, youth empowerment, employment, infrastructure, security and inclusive development during his second term.

The association also urged political actors who may have grievances over the election to pursue them through constitutional and legal channels rather than resorting to confrontation.

NAUS said young Nigerians should be regarded as active stakeholders in the country’s democratic process because government policies directly affect their education, employment opportunities and future prospects.

INEC declared Adeleke the winner after he secured 511,067 votes, defeating the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes. Adeleke won 19 of Osun’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji won 11.
