Luigi Mangione has pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges stemming from the 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, in a major development that could affect a separate murder case against him in New York state court.

Mangione, 28, entered his guilty plea in a Manhattan federal court on Friday, reversing his previous not guilty plea. The federal case centres on two stalking charges connected to the killing of Thompson, who was shot outside a Manhattan hotel on December 4, 2024.

The federal murder and weapons charges against Mangione were dismissed earlier this year after a judge ruled that they were legally incompatible with the remaining stalking charges. The dismissal removed the possibility of a federal death sentence, although the stalking charges carry a potential sentence of life imprisonment without parole.

Mangione is also facing a separate state murder case in Manhattan. He has pleaded not guilty to the state charges, including second degree murder, and his trial is scheduled to begin on September 8.

His guilty plea in the federal case could have significant consequences for the state prosecution. Mangione’s lawyers are expected to argue that proceeding with the state murder case would violate double jeopardy protections, while Manhattan prosecutors have indicated that they will oppose such an argument, maintaining that the federal and state charges are legally distinct.

Thompson was killed while walking to an investor conference in Manhattan in December 2024. The shooting triggered a nationwide manhunt that ended with Mangione’s arrest in Pennsylvania five days later.

The case has attracted widespread public attention and sparked broader debate about the American health insurance industry. Mangione has also gained a vocal following online since his arrest.

The federal court will determine Mangione’s sentence at a later date. Meanwhile, the separate state murder proceedings remain scheduled to continue unless the court rules otherwise.
