The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has stressed the need for stronger institutions and effective communication to sustain Nigeria’s anti corruption reforms and economic stability.

Idris made the remarks on Thursday in Abuja at the Economic Confidential Lecture and 6th National Spokespersons Awards 2026, themed, “Anti Corruption Reforms, Economic Stability and Effective Communication.”

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the minister said transparent governance, institutional accountability and clear communication were essential to building public trust and ensuring the success of economic reforms.

He noted that corruption weakens institutions, distorts public spending and undermines public confidence, making sustainable economic development difficult to achieve.

Idris said the Federal Government, under the Renewed Hope Agenda, was implementing reforms aimed at strengthening the economy, improving accountability and restoring investor confidence.

He stressed that the fight against corruption should go beyond arrests and prosecutions to developing systems that prevent abuse. He added that digitalising government processes and improving public financial management and procurement systems would strengthen accountability.

The minister also emphasised the importance of effective communication, saying Nigerians deserved timely and accurate explanations of government policies and decisions.

He urged government spokespersons to listen to citizens and described the media as an important partner in promoting accountability through investigative journalism and responsible reporting.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr Musa Aliyu, described corruption as a major obstacle to Nigeria’s economic transformation.

Aliyu said tackling corruption required sustained reforms, preventive measures, ethical reorientation and effective enforcement, adding that stronger institutions and transparent systems would improve service delivery and attract investment.

The Managing Director of Image Merchants Promotion Ltd., Mr Yushau Shuaib, said the event provided an opportunity to examine the relationship between anti corruption reforms, economic stability and strategic communication.

He disclosed that a research project titled “Artificial Intelligence in Crisis Communication in Nigeria” would also be unveiled at the event.

NAN reports that the awards recognised professionalism, excellence and integrity among public communication practitioners and spokespersons.
