The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has commenced plans to introduce Radio Frequency Identification technology for baggage tracking across Nigerian airports in a move aimed at reducing cases of lost, delayed, damaged and misrouted luggage.
The initiative is expected to allow passengers to monitor the location of their checked baggage in real time from the point of check in through loading and arrival at their destination.
The NCAA disclosed the plan during a technology modernisation briefing attended by airlines, ground handling companies and other stakeholders in the aviation industry.
The authority’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, said baggage handling remains one of the major sources of complaints from air passengers, ranking behind flight delays among the industry’s most persistent consumer concerns.
According to the authority, RFID technology will provide a more automated and reliable system for identifying and tracking passengers’ luggage as it moves through different stages of the airport handling process.
Unlike conventional barcode based systems that require tags to be scanned at different points, RFID uses radio frequency technology to identify tagged baggage and capture its movement automatically. This is expected to improve the ability of airlines and ground handlers to locate luggage and identify where problems occur.
The NCAA said the system would also help address cases of short landed baggage, where passengers arrive at their destination without their luggage, as well as bags mistakenly sent to the wrong destination.
For passengers, the introduction of real time tracking could significantly improve confidence in the baggage handling process. Travellers would have greater visibility over their luggage and could potentially identify delays or misrouting before reaching the baggage reclaim area.
The initiative is part of the broader push by the aviation regulator to modernise operations through technology and improve service delivery across Nigeria’s aviation sector.
The NCAA is expected to work with airlines, airport operators and ground handlers to establish the infrastructure and operational procedures required for the system to function effectively across the country’s airports.
Improved baggage tracking could also help airlines and handling companies resolve passenger complaints more efficiently. With accurate information on the movement of individual bags, operators would be better positioned to trace missing luggage and determine the stage at which a mishandling incident occurred.
The move comes amid growing passenger expectations for faster, more transparent and technology driven airport services. As passenger traffic increases, efficient baggage management has become increasingly important to maintaining service quality.
The initiative could also reduce financial losses associated with mishandled baggage, including the costs incurred by airlines when luggage is lost, delayed or damaged.
The NCAA’s move reflects a broader shift towards digitalisation within Nigeria’s aviation industry, where regulators and operators are increasingly adopting automated systems to improve safety, efficiency and passenger experience.
If successfully implemented, RFID baggage tracking could provide Nigerian airports with a more reliable baggage management system while bringing the country’s airport operations closer to international best practices.
For passengers, the most immediate benefit would be greater visibility and accountability, potentially bringing an end to the uncertainty that often follows delayed or missing luggage.
