Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has commissioned 18 township roads covering 49.7 kilometres in Bauchi State, with the projects valued at approximately ₦58.7 billion.
The former president commissioned the road projects on Monday during an official visit to Bauchi, where he also laid the foundation for the construction of four recreational parks in the Bauchi metropolis.
Speaking at the ceremony, Jonathan commended Governor Bala Mohammed for what he described as purposeful investment in infrastructure, noting that good road networks are essential to economic growth, connectivity and improved quality of life.
He said the 49.7km road network goes beyond the construction of asphalt, describing it as an investment in economic opportunities, commerce and inclusive development.
Governor Bala Mohammed explained that the 18 roads were designed to connect key residential areas, commercial centres, schools and public facilities across the state capital.
According to the governor, the projects include durable pavements, drainage systems, culverts, traffic signs, road markings and solar-powered streetlights on selected routes.
He said the intervention had already improved mobility, economic activities and job opportunities across Bauchi metropolis.
Governor Mohammed disclosed that his administration has a broader target of constructing at least 5,000 kilometres of roads across Bauchi State, adding that approximately 3,000 kilometres have been completed since he assumed office in 2019.
Both Jonathan and Governor Mohammed urged residents to protect the infrastructure and ensure that the newly completed roads are properly maintained for the benefit of present and future generations.
