A North Korean-linked hacking group is reportedly using artificial intelligence tools to improve its cyber operations, according to research by South Korean cybersecurity firm Genians.
The group, identified as Kimsuky, has reportedly built local AI environments that can be used to process information, assist with coding and analyze documents. Researchers also identified tools that could support AI-assisted development and information gathering.
According to the report, using AI locally could give the hackers greater control over sensitive information and reduce the need to send data to external AI platforms.
The findings also suggest that AI could help the group make phishing campaigns more convincing, analyze stolen information and support the development of malicious software.
The development highlights a growing concern among cybersecurity experts: artificial intelligence is not only being used by businesses and researchers, but is also becoming part of the toolkit available to sophisticated cyber threat groups.
While the research provides evidence of AI-related tools associated with Kimsuky, the full extent to which the technology has been used in actual attacks remains unclear. Reuters said the findings have not been independently verified.
