Apple is testing memory chips from Chinese semiconductor maker CXMT for possible use across products including iPhones and MacBooks, as the company seeks to secure supplies amid a global memory shortage driven by the artificial intelligence boom.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple has held preliminary discussions with CXMT about supplying memory components for some devices intended for the Chinese market. The move could help Apple diversify its memory supply as demand for chips rises sharply.
Apple is also seeking approval from the U.S. government to work with CXMT, reflecting the growing challenge for American technology companies operating between Washington’s export restrictions and China’s expanding semiconductor industry.
CXMT, one of China’s leading memory chip manufacturers, has been expanding its production capabilities as Beijing pushes for greater domestic semiconductor self-sufficiency.
The discussions remain at an early stage, and it is unclear whether Apple will ultimately use CXMT chips in commercial products.
