Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised the decision by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to freeze the bank accounts of the Osun State Government, describing the action as unjustified and calling for its immediate reversal.

Atiku argued that freezing the state’s accounts could disrupt governance and hinder the delivery of essential public services, including the payment of salaries, execution of infrastructure projects and provision of healthcare and education services. He maintained that anti corruption efforts should not come at the expense of the welfare of ordinary citizens.

The former presidential candidate urged the EFCC to ensure that its investigations are conducted within the bounds of the law while respecting the constitutional responsibilities of state governments. He stressed that any action capable of paralysing government operations should be carefully considered to avoid unintended consequences for residents.

According to Atiku, the fight against corruption must be transparent, impartial and guided by due process. He called on relevant authorities to resolve any disputes through lawful procedures that uphold justice and accountability.

The development has generated mixed reactions among political stakeholders. While some support the EFCC’s efforts to investigate allegations of financial misconduct, others argue that enforcement actions should be balanced with the need to maintain uninterrupted public administration.

Legal experts note that anti corruption agencies possess investigative powers under Nigerian law but emphasise that such powers are subject to judicial oversight and constitutional safeguards. They add that disputes arising from enforcement actions are often resolved through the courts.

As discussions continue, observers say the outcome of the matter could have broader implications for the relationship between anti corruption agencies and state governments, particularly regarding the conduct of investigations involving public funds.

The EFCC has yet to issue further details on the matter, while stakeholders continue to call for a resolution that upholds the rule of law, protects public interest and ensures accountability in the management of government resources.
