President Bola Tinubu has approved a salary increase of between 30 and 80 per cent for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with the new pay structure taking effect from September 1, 2026.

The announcement was made by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who said the package will benefit about 250,000 military personnel across all service branches.

The salary adjustment is structured to favour lower ranking personnel:

  • Private to Staff Sergeant – 80% increase
  • Warrant Officer to Colonel – 50% increase
  • Brigadier General to General – 30% increase

The new package will raise the annual military salary bill from N660 billion to N924 billion, representing an additional N264 billion in government expenditure.

President Tinubu said the decision recognises the sacrifices of soldiers fighting banditry, terrorism, kidnapping and other security threats across the country.

He reaffirmed that troop welfare and military modernisation remain key priorities of his administration, pledging continued investment in weapons, equipment and technology to strengthen the armed forces.

According to the President, national security remains central to Nigeria’s development, stressing that the government will continue mobilising military and law enforcement agencies to safeguard lives and property.

Tinubu urged military personnel to see the salary increase as a demonstration of the government’s appreciation for their service and dedication to the country.
