Sen. Mohammed Onawo, representing Nasarawa South Senatorial District, has defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Nasarawa State.
According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Onawo announced his defection during a news conference on Wednesday in Lafia, saying the decision followed extensive consultations with political leaders, associates and stakeholders across the state.
The senator, who was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023 before joining the ADC, said he left the party over what he described as manipulation and lack of transparency during its governorship primary election.
He alleged that the primary election was marred by irregularities and maintained that there was no level playing field for aspirants, describing the exercise as worse than the circumstances that led to his exit from the PDP.
Onawo said his decision to join the APM was driven by his desire to pursue inclusive governance, grassroots development and unity in Nasarawa State.
Declaring his governorship ambition, the lawmaker expressed confidence in his ability to lead the state, citing his experience as a former Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, a two term member of the House of Representatives and a serving senator.
He promised to run an inclusive administration that would promote development across all ethnic and religious groups while prioritising prosperity and improved welfare for the people of the state.
The senator also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure the conduct of a free, fair and credible election during the 2027 general elections.
