Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu has expressed confidence that Nigeria will take control of its own destiny when the team faces Egypt in its final Group C match at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, insisting the focus remains firmly on securing qualification for the quarter-finals.

The defending champions endured a difficult start to their title defence, suffering a surprise 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi before bouncing back with a determined 1-0 victory over Zambia despite being reduced to 10 players.

Nigeria enters the final round of group matches on three points, three behind leaders Malawi. Victory over Egypt is essential to keep the Falcons’ hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive, although their qualification could also depend on the outcome of the simultaneous clash between Zambia and Malawi.

Despite the various qualification scenarios, Madugu says his side is determined to produce the result that keeps its fate in its own hands.

“We have looked at all the possible permutations and we understand exactly what we need to do. Our objective is to ensure our qualification is in our own hands, and we are fully focused on achieving the result that will take us through,” Madugu said during his pre-match press conference.

The Super Falcons coach came under heavy criticism after Nigeria’s opening defeat to Malawi, with questions raised over his tactical approach, team selection and the deployment of several players in unfamiliar positions.

However, Madugu responded by making key changes for the crucial encounter against Zambia. Experienced striker Asisat Oshoala, midfielder Deborah Abiodun and Christy Ucheibe all returned to the starting line-up, while substitutes Shukurat Oladipo and Rofiat Imuran also impressed with strong performances.

Those adjustments paid off as Oshoala’s early goal secured a vital victory that revived Nigeria’s campaign and restored confidence within the squad.

Madugu now hopes to guide the Super Falcons into the knockout stage as they continue their quest for a record-extending 11th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title while also pursuing qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

The Nigerian coach’s achievements have already earned international recognition after he was shortlisted among the nominees for the Ballon d’Or Coach of the Year award following last year’s continental triumph.
